Brake Performance Tests - UIC Homologation
Before any field evaluation, disc brake pads and brake blocks are subjected to full size dynamometer testing. This assesses the frictional performance under various simulated braking conditions such as dry and wet condition as well as route simulation with regard to speed, axle load, retardation rate and route profile.
In most cases, the railway friction materials are evaluated according to the test programmes outlined in UIC 541-3 leaflet for disc brake pads and UIC 541-4 leaflet for brake blocks
A product has to meet the requirements of a number of such dynamometer test programmes before it can be accepted for field evaluation which consists of two parts:
-
Stopping distance test according to the guidelines and requirements outlined in the UIC 544-1 leaflet.
Provided the “braked weight percentage” values are in line with design values of the tested vehicle, then - One year in-service evaluation under various climate conditions.
