Railway Brake Shoes -
Metal Pickup
The occurrence of metal inclusion in railway brake blocks is a long standing problem for the operators of freight wagons, locomotives, metro vehicles and passenger trains fitted with a tread braking system.
Such metal inclusions, known as “metal pickup”, could cause:
- Damage to wheel tread
- Accelerated wear
- Change frictional characteristics of brake block
- Damage to brake block surface
Formulation design is the best and the most effective approach to avoid any metal pickup during the service life of railway brake blocks; where the causes of metal inclusion are addressed at the product development stage.
UIC 541-4 leaflet describes a dynamometer test programme for assessing the tendency of brake blocks to form metallic inclusion.
To be accepted for in-service evaluation, brake blocks should meet the requirements of such dynamometer test programme as part of the approval process.
