MLP Friction Braking Limited provides application engineering assistance to its friction material producing clients to prepare comprehensive operational envelope for each product.
They also select the most suitable product for a given operational duty by conducting the corresponding brake calculations as well as thermal calculations.
One such example is the “slip testing” of brake blocks according to UIC 544-1 leaflet (Brakes – Brake performance) to determine the braked weight percentage (λ) for a given wagon weight.
This is done through stopping distance tests which should meet a number of requirements outlined in the UIC leaflet such as criteria K1 and K2 which must be simultaneously met for the mean stopping distance value to be considered valid.
