Railway Friction Materials

In the form of disc brake pads and brake blocks, friction materials are an essential part of railway braking system for passenger trains as well as freight wagons.

They can be divided into three categories:

These are mainly rubber and resin based products and are suitable for most railway operations; depending on maximum speed and axle load of the railway vehicle.

These are metallic based products mainly designed for very high speed trains up to a maximum operational speed of 400 Km/h.

These types of friction materials are suitable for very high operational duties where the temperature exceeds 1000 °C.

Taking the concept of “Friction Pair” into consideration, these products are mainly designed to operate in conjunction with ceramic brake discs.
